Floral Travels: Longwood Gardens in the Winter

Longwood Gardens, 40 miles outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is a wonderful place to visit, even in the winter.  The extensive greenhouses and outbuildings protect and nurture flowers, plants and trees from all over.  It is easy to forget the biting cold when you enter the lush and creative growing spaces. the wimsical ironwork in the children's garden is worth the trip alone!

First started by the Pierre S. duPont in the early 1900's as a country retreat, it has evolved over the years as a premiere garden and education center.  Click here for a link to the history of Longwood Gardens. There is an elegant ballroom flanked by greenhouses so large you don't realize that you are still indoors.  The space makes you wish for a time machine for the possibility of attending a ball in this breathtaking space.

And the flora, oh the flora!  Even in the dead of winter the place was an oasis and truly unique!
