"Sweet" Debutante Party

"Sugar and Spice and everything nice..."  That is what this summer's debutant party is made of.  Such a fun and original "candyland" theme.

Floral Trends for Summer 2014

Pantone may have dubbed 2014's color or the year "Radiant Orchid", but here in Cincinnati, it was all about blush, pink, peach, champagne, taupe, cream, white and gold!

Elegance and class are the buzzwords for summer 2014 with our Yellow Canary couples.  Soft romantic colors with rich gold highlights.

Classy Casual: The Family Farm Wedding

This summer Yellow Canary had the pleasure to provide florals for an intimate family farm wedding.  The beauty of this wedding is that the couple was able to maintain the informal theme without sacrificing class.

The following are a few shots we took ourselves (please forgive the darkness of a few shots.  We hope for a few professional shots later).

Yellow Canary: Everyday "Must Haves"

Everyone has their little list of "must have" brands or products.  While the rest of the "canarys" are flitting around during our wedding season, I will contribute the Ginny list of everyday must-have products.  All will share by the end of the summer- feel free to share some of your favorites in the comments section!

1. Coffee- I have a few favorite brands or coffee shops, but truly, as long as it is strong and not scalding hot- it is all good to me!

2. Aquafresh Extreme Clean- If you have not tried this toothpaste I suggest you try it!  My mouth still feels fresh, even after the coffee I enjoy all morning.  The "extreme" in the name is not kidding around- this is not for the faint of heart!

3. Clinique Foundation and Powder- I have über-red skin and spend a fair amount of my "primping" time hiding my red cheeks and after years of trying to find the perfect cover, I have finally come up with a faceplan that works for me.  I use a foundation brush to apply the Clinique Redness Solution foundation to the apple of my cheeks and wherever it is the reddest.  After it settles, I use  the Superpowder Double Face Powder all over to even and smooth.  Neither makeup system is too heavy  or chunky- the overall effect is pretty smooth.

4. Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiance Lotion- I wear sunscreen regularly but like a little color, so lotion with a tiny bit of self tanner is my way to go.  It covers naturally and smells good and is not too heavy to wear in the hot summer!

5.Peppermint Stick- This is an awesome headache stick that I picked up at Nourish in Savannah, Georgia.  After the first application I was hooked; it helps relieve a headache, cools you when you are hot and helps you focus when you are fatigued.

6. Nourish Soap- Speaking of Nourish, I have had one of their bars of soap in one scent or another for the past three years or so.  The Lavender Oatmeal bar is probably my favorite, but they are all wonderful!

May Birth Flower: The Dainty Lily of the Valley

  1. May's birth flower is the lily of the valley, which signifies sweetness, humility, and a return to happiness. If you want to show your loved one that your life is complete with them, give them a few lilies of the valley.

April Birth Flower: The Daisy

The birth flower for the month of April is the ever-popular daisy.  Such a prolific flower, you can find these favorites on EVERY continent except Antarctica.

The daisy is primarily the symbol of childhood innocence.  It does hearken memories of pulling petals from the wildflower as a little girl; he loves me, he loves me not...  Never really bothering to wonder who "he" was.  Some days it was Ricky Schroeder from "Silver Spoons", others it was the cute boy on the bus.

Each flower has a message, according to the Language of Flowers. The daisy brings a message of innocence and purity, saying, "You have as many virtues as this plant has petals," or, "I will consider your request."

What is a Frog?

A Yellow Canary favorite, the frog is an elegant and eco-friendly apparatus to keep an arrangement in place.  According to The Antiquer's Field Guide:
"Originally called flower holders or arrangers, flower frogs were first used in the United States in the early 1800’s. The devices peaked in popularity in the 1920’s and 1930’s, at which time over 20 companies manufactured a variety of styles. After the Depression and World War II, the making of flower frogs rapidly declined and ceased altogether after the invention of florist’s foam in 1954.
Flower frogs are still functional, of course, but today collectors have come to appreciate them as ornaments, and they are highly collectible."
And collect them we do, we are always keeping our eyes open for metal and glass frogs.  Yellow Canary's Ginny is even attempting to make them in pottery class (pictured at the end, this is a first attempt- remember, practice makes perfect!).

Just a few from our collection:

Planning for Summer Arrangements

At Yellow Canary, we are preparing for some warm weather and "planting" opportunities for truly original arrangements this summer!  Herbs aren't just for bringing drama to dinner, they bring depth, texture and fragrance to floral decor as well!

So far, we have our eye on:

Inspiration by Color - Red

A rose by any other name is a rose. Red, however, is a different story: scarlet, crimson, vermillion, burgundy, rust, ruby, I could go on...

♬ Singing the Praises of Billy Buttons ♬

Craspedia is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family commonly known as billy buttons and woollyheads. No matter what they are called, they  are a Yellow Canary favorite for their texture, substance and, of course, their dazzling color! They bring a "pop" to a subtle floral or pump up a vibrant arrangement.  Take a look at some of the many ways they can be used...
